[Nora hasn't found a steady job yet, but that doesn't mean she's not busy. She continues to keep herself in shape, occasionally sneaks Zwei some treats from the kitchen, practices her Dunamis (Weiss would call her out if she didn't) and looks for odd bits of work to earn money on the side.
When she returns to the room she shares with Pyrrha, the first sight that greets her is not her teammate, but a sword and a shield propped up nearby. Their owner is nowhere in sight, either.
Already, Nora has a bad feeling brewing in her stomach (and it's not the same as the time Ren gave her a gross health drink). She looks around and calls out:]
[ From around the corner, Pyrrha peeks her head in. Surprise! She hadn't actually been in the room. ]
Is something the matter?
[ By now, she's so used to having Crocea Mors and Jaune's armor hanging around that it doesn't occur to her that's what Nora is concerned about. Huh. ]
[ No, she's never talked to anyone in this manner.
Yes, she is freaking out.
It'd be more accurate to say that, a moment ago, she had been sitting calmly on the bench at their house's stone porch. The moment that Jaune's voice rings so clearly between her ears, Pyrrha flinches - and it's to such a degree that she bangs her head on one of the planter fixtures overhead.
Ow. :(
Needless to say, Jaune has to wait a moment before he gets a reply. She makes a point of looking around, as if expecting to see him peering out from a shrubbery, dressed in camouflage with a felt owl tied to his head. (Where did that come from?)
Finally, she tests the waters of this apparent telepathy, responding, ]
[ This RWBY/JNPR house has really gotten into the habit of leaving notes instead of talking to each other like normal people, haven't they? Case in point, Pyrrha will find a note from Jaune in her room. ]
Hey, Pyrrha
I'm sorry I couldn't tell you or Nora in person before I left, but I think you could have talked me out of it if I did. I took on a small job for someone I met! Don't worry, it's not dangerous or anything. I'll be back in a few days, I just thought it would be good to give the house a little break from me. If you're wondering, Weiss and I had a chat and I might have upset her. I know, big shocker, right? And while you and I managed to patch things up, I don't know if Weiss and I will ever get the chance to sit down and talk. To be honest, I'm just tired of bringing the house down, it's not the person I ever wanted to be. Please don't be mad at her either and just take care of each other, okay? You're all important to me.
I'll be back before you know it, and if you need me, then my door is always open. Or should I say my mind? Open mind?? I'm saying you can telepath (?) me and I'll answer. Man, I miss phones.
[ She doesn't end up communicating with him telepathically when he's gone, as it turns out. He'll be greeted warmly, because four days is a long time to be without your partner and (platonic) soulmate, and also because she's tired of tension and unhappiness. The house can only beget warmth if they put warmth into it.
For now, for the moment - she's hurt. Even though he's apologising and she's already made the decision to accept his apology, it's a brittle wound to know he left without saying a proper goodbye, without letting his team know where he was going.
She doesn't think for a second that it's the same thing that she did way back when. At some point, Pyrrha had decided to trust that Jaune wasn't about to be so petty or unkind.
They've spent enough time being hard on one another.
If she ends up crying in her room - briefly, mildly - it's without an audience. ]
[ receiving mail is nice and all, but when it's unsigned and its contents are more questionable than anything, weiss can't help but get worried. there aren't any cameras in their house to capture anybody who goes in and out, so all she can do is ask the people who live in the house if they know anything. ]
[ Pyrrha finds herself frowning at the query, but it's more thoughtful than suspicious. Her room with Nora doesn't face the front and, besides, she had been working an evening shift. ]
No one really distinct...
[ Canting her head, she turns toward the direction Weiss is speaking of. Why? ... Because! ]
[ It's been a long night, and trying to make it home had it's own challenges, too. Once he stumbled his way inside, he had passed out in the same clothes he wore that night, and when he woke up again? Well, let's just say he missed breakfast entirely.
Not that he's feeling too hungry right now. He's dehydrated, his head feels heavy, and on top of everything... he doesn't know what that thing between him and Pyrrha means. All he knows is that he screwed it up, and then he ran away. If had stayed, who knows what might have happened... and maybe that's what he's afraid of.
Still, he really ought to check on her...
When he's done throwing up in the bathroom and washing his face, he tries to leave and-- bumps into Pyrrha right at the doorway, leaving them stuck doing the awkward dance of who's going to let who pass. ]
[ For once, Pyrrha had been grateful to have her and Nora's shared room to herself for the night. She barely even remembered getting home, or getting halfway undressed, or - ick, throwing up largely into her own hair? By the time she literally bumps into Jaune, she's knotted her hair up in an uncharacteristic bun and somehow lost her pants but kept her socks and sweater from the previous night. She's visibly clammy, a shade paler than is her wont, with dark shadows under her eyes and the imprint of a pillow case creasing her cheek. To put it simply, she hasn't looked this bad since the botched aura transferal.
So, when she tries to respond to Jaune's greeting, ]
Oh, he—
[ ... she can barely get two words out before the unforgivable crime of opening her mouth spells disaster. Feeling her stomach lurch, more bile rising, she stops midword and ducks under his arm, making way for the toilet.
There are some seriously gross sounds happening now. ]
Maybe they should go to Steambucks. Yang could avoid answering that by getting that steamer that makes you breathe fire again. Because never has she wanted to lie about something more than she does right now.]
Honestly...? [A small pause.] There's not much to hear.
[ Curiously, she peers over at Yang. Pyrrha can certainly see the way her friend's expression tightens, but she can't imagine her not having a lot to talk about. ]
Hello, Pyrrha. I hope you're having a wonderful day!
You might be wondering why I'm writing to you when I could just go to your room and talk to you in person. It's because I'm writing letters to friends for a task. I don't get money out of it; instead, I get the feeling of accomplishment from promoting an old-fashioned means of communication.
I'm really glad that you've gotten yourself a job. Not only because you can pay your share of rent now, but also because working is a good use of one's time. I certainly didn't like not being able to do anything when I was in Atlas. It's much better to be out there and helping people, or in this case, serving people. I truly hope that you'll find a successful career in this!
Jaune told me you threw up on his pants. If the laundry hasn't been done yet, I was hoping that those pants can just be thrown away instead of washed. Don't tell him.
[ Pyrrha thinks they shouldn't spend time alone anymore. Jaune wants to respect her wishes. Let's see how long they will last. ]
- DAY 1 -
[ In truth, Jaune doesn't really want to spend time apart from Pyrrha. No matter what goes on between them, she is practically his other half and he feels less complete without his partner. Who else truly understands him better than her? Even if Pyrrha is bad at picking up how he feels about her, he still knows how to be his true self whenever he's around her, because she'll never think of him as a lovable idiot. And without her? He doesn't know who he is.
The first day of this new relationship isn't exactly easy either! When Jaune bursts into Pyrrha's room to tell her about something cool he learned today, he belatedly remembers that they agreed against this. Without saying a single word, he simply nods and leaves the room. Well, that was weird!
[ He enters when she's sitting on bed, combing tangles out of her damp hair. She sees his shoes before anything, eyes rising quickly as a quick delighted expression flits across her face. Habit, one she doesn't quite think to smother, although it does give way to eventual confusion when he nods and marches back out.
Knowing she brought this upon herself, Pyrrha swallows any feelings of loneliness, missing him desperately and wondering if this really is all for the best. ]
- DAY 2 -
[ Coming back after a long run on her day off, Pyrrha and (her favourite jogging buddy!) Zwei both make a beeline for their respective water providers -- Zwei, for his bowl, and Pyrrha, for the bottle she keeps refrigerated.
Hearing a noise behind, she turns to see Jaune entering the kitchen from from the opposite door she had come from.
It occurs to her, belatedly, that with Zwei here, they aren't actually alone and not breaking their agreement. By the time she gets to that point, almost opening her mouth to say hello, the corgi trots merrily out of the room.
[Wherever Pyrrha is, maybe at work or maybe as she relaxes somewhere, a brightly colored messenger bird will flutter down to join her. The note it carries reads as follows:]
[There's an additional slip of paper behind the note with the gift certificate's information on it. It seems it's good towards a full dinner at one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Verens. Enjoy Pyrrha!]
[ Ruby had always intended to write Pyrrha while she was away. To keep her up to date on things that were going on at home without taking Pyrrha's attention away from what she had set out to find. Ruby knew the trip was important to her, or she wouldn't have gone. She respected that.
But now things have gone off the wire in a way that Ruby couldn't have predicted, and Penny is here. She doesn't check to find out if Jaune or any one else has already sent a message to Pyrrha about this, and - maybe it's better left alone for now. The last thing Ruby wants to do is make Pyrrha feel like she should come back early, or ruin her trip. But - it wasn't fair to keep this from her, either.
Just like it wasn't fair what Ruby was keeping from Penny. ]
Pyrrha? Are you there? I'm sorry about this, but it's really important.
[ Truthfully, Pyrrha has no idea what this could be about. She's kept radio silence since her talk with Jaune. Although she misses her friends - and she does, make no mistake - there is something to be said about the solitude, fresh air and endless earth. She can't put words to it, and isn't sure she wants to. When it's time to go home, when she finally begins to miss the little house on their corner of Verens as a home, then she will.
So, Ruby hasn't written. That's fine. Jaune hasn't initiated calls. That's - that's also fine.
Really important. That does get her to pause.
It's almost a half hour before she responds, but not because she was purposefully ignoring Ruby. The lower world is contentious, and Pyrrha can't always stop just because she wants to. ]
I'm here. Sorry, I was in the middle of something. [ To put one spin on it. ] Is everyone alright?
[the past week has been a little. . . well. let's just say it isn't easy to deal with a group of incredibly close friends who either think they're married to a scumbag, think you're dead, or think they're dead. but the crystals needed to dispel those false memories have been harvested, so now all that's left is for Akira to wait]
[and waiting is always the worst fucking part]
[it's evening when he calls. the mild tugging at the back of her mind indicating that someone is trying to contact her shouldn't be that obnoxious. and should she pick up--]
I'm thinking of a number between one and ten. Three guesses, see if you can get it right.
[he must really be in need of a distraction. plz provide Pyrrha]
[ It's over an hour before she responds. It's not necessarily because she wanted to ignore him, per se - more simply, she had to wait until she was in a fairly shaded spot before she could let down her guard enough to talk. The ruins of the lower world are beautiful, but hardly the most gregarious location to be wandering.
By the time she answers him, she's sitting high up, legs dangling comfortably. The world is open beneath her, endless plains and forgotten ruin.
Pyrrha likes these views, and they put her in a more companionable mood. Her tone, he'll find, is an easy, cheered one.
(Definitely a good thing she has no idea about the memory shenanigans.) ]
Only three? Well, I guess I'll need to be very careful.
[ Jaune is doing handyman work today, which means he's up on the roof hammering away at any broken parts of it. The weather alone has been erratic lately, and just because it's sunny right now, doesn't mean that it won't rain half an hour from now. So, they better patch up any holes before then!
[ Of course, Pyrrha's hanging out at home today, and it's largely just the two of them. Everyone else is at work, and perhaps she had scheduled her day off to coordinate with when she knew Jaune would be at his most unemployed, wanting to spend some time with her partner.
She's in the kitchen when he bellows and smiles to herself over her task. Her soft voice touches his thoughts. ]
Is that really the best way to do that?
[ Despite her remark, her mind-voice is more amused than anything. ]
I'll be right up. Hold on a moment.
[ True to her word, she's clambering out a window and onto the roof a few minutes later! In one hand, a box of nails, because of course she knew what he needed without having to ask. In the other hand, his lunch! Hopefully he likes meat and cheese tacos. ]
[ it's a quiet evening at from the hearth, which means that there's a relaxing atmosphere for both patrons and staff alike. steven is treating himself to a dessert coffee tonight as he waits for ignis to finish his business, but there's someone else that he wants to speak with. thankfully, she's the one that brings him his order! ]
I don't mean to interrupt your shift, but I was hoping that I could ask you something. Your name is Pyrrha, isn't it?
[ It hadn't been Pyrrha taking his order, but she serves him with alacrity, happily taking over from her departing co-worker. His beverage is set down with a napkin and she's about to ask if he needs anything else, but he beats her to it. ]
Yes, that's my name.
[ ???
Her smile is a bit put on, but that's largely from surprise. It's quickly covered by service pleasantries. ]
[ Ozpin is here. Why now, just after Pyrrha started to get on with her life again? Does she even know yet? Jaune's first instinct is to contact her telepathically, but he resists the urge. Whether or not Pyrrha knows about it, Jaune wants to be there for her in person. He has to be, if they hope to do things differently than before.
In all honesty, Jaune wishes he could delay telling her the bad news. Not forever. Even just a little bit would do, because anything that comes after that wouldn't be any good. He wouldn't do that, though, they made a promise not to keep things from each other anymore.
None of it matters, in the end, because as soon as Jaune enters the Hearth and sees Pyrrha behind the bar, he immediately knows that he's too late. He can see it in her eyes, her body language... Pyrrha knows.
And she can see that he knows, too. His own expression is one of concern, anger and confusion.
He says nothing, only indicating that he wants to hug her. That's the first and most important thing right now. ]
[ When he finds her, she's (for lack of a better word) appreciating the post-lunch lull and a near empty floor, quietly pretending at work while trying to get her thoughts together. Ozpin left over an hour ago. Pyrrha's been on auto ever since, conducting her scripted service work and being unable to remember each exchange five minutes later.
Jaune doesn't call before stopping by. That's fine. The moment he steps wordlessly through the door, she lifts her head, beckoned as if he had called her name.
Just outside the nook of the bar, his arms are open and Pyrrha steps into them, a choked sound uttered into his chest.
She can't let herself cry here, certainly, but... she's glad to see him. ]
[ No context necessary - they hang out 90% of the time. ]
I'm always in charge, I'm never in debt. I'm known as the first amongst all my kind. I'm found within cars, but never in buses. I'm not used in Shion, I'm used in Mistral. Go!
[ It's a brain teaser! Apparently they do these things now. ]
[ This episode of the Arkos sitcom opens up in Pyrrha's room for once, specifically with Jaune barging through the door without knocking (if it was closed). ]
Pyrrha!! Quick! What's my greatest strength?
[ To be fair, he's not fishing for buttpatts, despite what it looks like. In fact, he's carrying a clipboard and a pen with him - some kind of questionnaire perhaps? ]
[ It was closed! He catches Pyrrha in the middle of a solitary work-out, energetically doing sit-ups between the two beds. Her t-shirt is fairly darkened with perspiration, but her breathing is even; she settles into a lean over her knees, peering up at him. ]
Well, you work very hard, you persevere despite the possibility of discouraging results...
[ She gestures to the small towel hanging off her vanity chair. Hand her that, love? ]
You're kind to everyone you meet, you're probably the most skilled strategist I've ever met, you have beautiful blue eyes-- [ Well! ] and a great mumblemumble. [ Yeah, you heard her. ]
[a present is being delivered to your door by messenger pigeon this holiday season!! it's a package, which includes: a spear cleaning and sharpening kit, for all of Pyrrha's spear upkeep needs; a tiny little action figure from some kind of Verens steampunk sentai show (the action figure is a woman who wields. . . YOU GUESSED IT. . . a javelin, and even if she doesn't know the series it comes from it reminds him of her okok); and another sheet of sparkly gold star stickers]
[It's about mid-day when Ignis reaches out to his young friend. There's a small handful of people he intends to broach this particular subject with, each with their own unique skills to offer, but Pyrrha is among the first he chooses to ask. He sounds pleasant enough when he contacts her through the crystal, if a bit reserved-- but that's nothing out of the ordinary.]
Pyrrha, should you have a moment, I would like to ask a favor of you.
[ It's rare to hear from him on a day where she's not working, but Pyrrha hardly begrudges that fact. The truth is, with so many staff members having gone home recently, days where she isn't working are fewer and more far between than ever. With so much proximity, it's understandable he'd give her space on her days off.
That's not to say she's offended to hear from him. Far from it. There's a smile in her own mind-voice when she replies. ]
Of course. I'd be happy to oblige.
[ Pyrrha, you... don't even know what the favour is yet... ]
[ No, the tree of his team definitely is not at home! Feeling her pendant glow warmly across her wrist, she almost ignores it. It's a queerly comforting thought - ignoring it, deciding that whoever called isn't important - but she ends up reasoning that if it's Ignis, or Nora, then... those are the people that deserve a response.
Jaune's voice, then.
Painfully, her heart flinches, as if longing to tug her bodily to wherever he is. ]
[the ease with which they've fallen into a comfortable friendship at this point is. . . really nice, actually. it means Akira isn't so hesitant to contact Pyrrha for things that aren't of the utmost importance, and aren't otherwise related to any tasks on the task board. sometimes? he just wants to hang out]
[so the greeting she gets today is easy and simple, and perhaps just a bit chipper. for no other reason than the fact that he's having a pretty good day]
Out of curiosity, who does the grocery shopping for your humble abode?
[ On an otherwise uneventful day, Akira's voice poking through her thoughts is a pleasant surprise. After the emotional whiplash of Selenium, Emerald's appearance, Jaune's brief disappearance... It's nice to have an uncomplicated encounter. She smiles to herself and answers. ]
Oh, according to our chore list--
[ Give her a second! ]
Team RWBY. So, that's Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang. Every Sunday.
[ Weiss, as self-proclaimed Chore Mistress, runs a tight ship. Evidently. ]
[ She hardly wants to talk to most people right now, and Ozpin more than that. Pyrrha sighs out, aware that she's still largely incapable of ignoring anyone, particularly a professor -- and replies. ]
Hi there! I'm Lonnie. I saw that you're looking for sparring partners and I'm interested in being one of them. Let me know what time you're free and I'll be there.
Ah, and in case you were wondering, I know how to fight with and without a sword. I think that's it. Thanks!
[ Finally, someone is responding to her ad! Pyrrha pumps her first in the air where no one can see. ]
I am free all day tomorrow and the next. Well, I'm off work, so you're welcome to come by any time. [ Pyrrha will give her address and then add: ] I have a sword as well. Do you prefer unarmed combat?
[There's a certain convenience to answering a task posted by someone who lives under the same roof as you, but that's not the only reason Neptune had shown interest. He and Pyrrha have never really had the chance to spar, or spend much time together outside of group activities in general, but he knows what an impressive force she is on the battlefield. He's curious to see what they might learn from one another, and the only way to improve oneself is to take on greater challenges, which sparring with Pyrrha Nikos certainly has the potential to be.
Besides, a home-cooked meal sounds great to him, even though he's quite enjoyed living off of Ren's cooking the last couple of months.
The afternoon finds them in the yard behind the house— they won't need any fancy equipment, but the open space is a must. Neptune's weapon is in guandao form, the end of it propped against the ground as he lightly leans his weight on it.]
Ready whenever you are. Any ground rules you want to lay out first?
[ Ren isn't the only cook in the household! He's just, you know, better at it than her... or anyone else, really. Anyway! She's quite happy that Neptune took her up on her task. No one can really understand the mechanics of Remnant combat like someone from there, and Team SSSN certainly didn't get their reputation by accident. Her new weapon, Metempsyche, is lashed to her back the way her old one used to be: no holster, no sheath, merely tucked away under her shield to give the illusion of some sort of holding mechanism. It is largely identical to Milo, with only a few cosmetic changes (courtesy of Jaune). In terms of function, it's exactly the weapon she brought with her to Beacon... and the weapon she lost there, too. ]
The first one to crack the other's Aura wins the match.
[ As in, the moment they see colour, they stop. It won't help her journey to regain her full strength if she's overly cautious, but... Neptune is a new opponent. She's still a little nervous, for all that it's been a year and a bit.
She hides it well, of course. Her words are punctuated with a cocky, casual smile. ]
And this is the part where Nora finds Crocea Mors not where it's supposed to be
When she returns to the room she shares with Pyrrha, the first sight that greets her is not her teammate, but a sword and a shield propped up nearby. Their owner is nowhere in sight, either.
Already, Nora has a bad feeling brewing in her stomach (and it's not the same as the time Ren gave her a gross health drink). She looks around and calls out:]

The first day of this new relationship isn't exactly easy either! When Jaune bursts into Pyrrha's room to tell her about something cool he learned today, he belatedly remembers that they agreed against this. Without saying a single word, he simply nods and leaves the room. Well, that was weird!
(He'll just tell Zwei about it instead.) ]

By the time she gets to that point, almost opening her mouth to say hello, the corgi trots merrily out of the room.
... what do. ]

Messenger Bird - Backdated to 7/1
[There's an additional slip of paper behind the note with the gift certificate's information on it. It seems it's good towards a full dinner at one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Verens. Enjoy Pyrrha!]
YOU KNOW WHEN
But now things have gone off the wire in a way that Ruby couldn't have predicted, and Penny is here.
SHOWS BACK UP WITH STARBUCKS
So, Ruby hasn't written. That's fine. Jaune hasn't initiated calls. That's - that's also fine.
Really important. That does get her to pause.
It's almost a half hour before she responds, but not because she was purposefully ignoring Ruby. The lower world is contentious, and Pyrrha can't always stop just because she wants to. ]
I'm here. Sorry, I was in the middle of something. [ To put one spin on it. ] Is everyone alright?
[ Wait for it... ]
Is it Jaune?

[and waiting is always the worst fucking part]
[it's evening when he calls. the mild tugging at the back of her mind indicating that someone is trying to contact her shouldn't be that obnoxious. and should she pick up--]
I'm thinking of a number between one and ten. Three guesses, see if you can get it right.
[he must really be in need of a distraction. plz provide Pyrrha]

She's in the kitchen when he bellows and smiles to herself over her task. Her soft voice touches his thoughts.

I don't mean to interrupt your shift, but I was hoping that I could ask you something. Your name is Pyrrha, isn't it?

Yes, that's my name.

action
Jaune doesn't call before stopping by. That's fine. The moment he steps wordlessly through the door, she lifts her head, beckoned as if he had called her name.
Just outside the nook of the bar, his arms are open and Pyrrha steps into them, a choked sound uttered into his chest.
She can't let herself cry here, certainly, but... she's glad to see him. ]

Because when I hear that name all I can think about is some knock off pocket monster.

[AROUND THE HOLIDAYS]
[a present is being delivered to your door by messenger pigeon this holiday season!! it's a package, which includes: a spear cleaning and sharpening kit, for all of Pyrrha's spear upkeep needs; a tiny little action figure from some kind of Verens steampunk sentai show (the action figure is a woman who wields. . . YOU GUESSED IT. . . a javelin, and even if she doesn't know the series it comes from it reminds him of her okok); and another sheet of sparkly gold star stickers]
[there's a note]
Thank you.

Pyrrha, should you have a moment, I would like to ask a favor of you.

That's not to say she's offended to hear from him. Far from it. There's a smile in her own mind-voice when she replies. ]
Of course. I'd be happy to oblige.

Out of curiosity, who does the grocery shopping for your humble abode?

[ Give her a second! ]
Team RWBY. So, that's Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang. Every Sunday.

The first one to crack the other's Aura wins the match.
[ As in, the moment they see colour, they stop. It won't help her journey to regain her full strength if she's overly cautious, but... Neptune is a new opponent. She's still a little nervous, for all that it's been a year and a bit.
She hides it well, of course. Her words are punctuated with a cocky, casual smile. ]
